CROSSING CULTURAL DIVIDES IN ASIA

January 30, 2013 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Crossing Cultural Divides in Asia: Bridging the Gap

Have you ever worked with somebody who is from a different background than you?  Every single day, we all interact with people from various business, countries, and industries.  Successful collaboration requires not only an awareness of, but also an understanding of how differing sets of experiences can shape the way we conduct business.  This class will help you improve your cross-cultural dealings by identifying where things might be getting lost in translation and providing you with actionable ways to communicate more clearly with your diverse set of counterparts.

Target audience:

This class is relevant for anyone looking to improve their cross cultural interactions.  Whether you are a seasoned business professional interested in expanding into new regions, or you are new to Asia entirely, this class will help you learn to overcome intercultural challenges in your every day life.

Student Takeaways:

  • An overall awareness and sensitivity to both macro and micro cultural divides
  • Ways of recognizing cultural differences and understanding they play a role in your success
  • Tools for navigating interactions with counterparties who may be playing by a different sets of rules

About the Instructors:

Jochen Kleef is a technical and management expert with proven business strategy development, operational and implementation as well as inter-cultural experience. During his scientific studies he moved from West to East Germany after the wall had come down and was subsequently based in Gent/Belgium and then London and later for a UK PLC in Frankfurt, Beijing and Hong Kong. He has had P&L responsibility for a number of Professional Services businesses of various sizes in both Europe and Asia. His experience spans from growing a team from zero to 6 staff to profitability. The common theme for all the businesses entrusted upon him was that, after a short strategic review, he implemented the turnaround measures identified and grew these businesses – on average doubling revenues every two years. Jochen has managed small and large teams of up to 4,000 staff in 70 locations across China. Jochen holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Cologne and a Master’s degree from the University of Jena in Physics and Ecology.

Ernest Ming has an honors degree in Materials Engineering, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and an MSc obtained from Imperial College (U.K). He previously worked for an advanced engineering material company in the UK prior to his return to Hong Kong. Ernest has over 6 years of business development and management experience in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development in Hong Kong and Mainland China. He is very well networked within Hong Kong and Mainland China and is a member of many influential associations such as the People’s Political Consultative Council, United Youth Committee and the Hong Kong Institute of Environmentalist. He is also an affiliated member of CIWEM in the UK and also a regular guest speaker at the City University of Hong Kong on environmental related topics.
